“In the depths of the Cold War, the daughter of an imprisoned Soviet dissident received a message from across the Iron Curtain that changed her family’s life.”
BBC
Not only an insight into life in Moldova during the Soviet era, but a lovely story.

I’m definitely back in London. I ran into one person I know on the way to the pub on Monday night, and more people on the way to the bus afterwards. I suppose I did run into the same group of students from Hamburg a few times in Ukraine and Krakow, but it’s not quite the same thing.
Last night I went to the Hayward Gallery for 60 Years of British Art then onto Bar Wotever. As much as I loved my trip, I did miss evenings like that.
Oh, and yay.
Krakow was lovely. I went on a tour by bike, then out drinking in Kazimierz with some people from the tour. More castles, more museums, etc.
The flight back was delayed (of course, it’s EasyJet) but I managed not to get strip-searched when entering the departure gate. Not being able to bring water is ridiculous, and I was not coping without lip balm. You should at least be able to buy the basics once you’re through security.
I’m back in London, where the most exotic thing I’ll be doing is going to the pub. Still, it’s nice to be home and I’m looking forward to catching up with everyone.
Maybe I’ll take up kitten huffing to recreate the travel high.
Happy birthday James!
Hope you’re having fun.
By the way, I’ve been uploading photos to Flickr as I go, internet cafes allowing. Sometimes I can’t use the USB stick, sometimes I can’t check my email, I never know what I’ll be allowed to do.
Arrived on site!
Just a quick note to say I’ve arrived on site, quite tired after a long trip from Istanbul (sitting up and in the smoker’s carriage, ugh). Istanbul is so lovely, I fell in love with it all over again. barbeque and party tonight, I’ve learnt how to time my arrivals and departures like an old hand 🙂
This transcript from Channel 4 just shows that Bush and Blair really are having an affair:
George Bush: … Thanks for sweater it’s awfully thoughtful of you
Tony Blair: It’s a pleasure
George Bush: I know you picked it out yourself
Tony Blair: Oh, absolutely, in fact I knitted it. [Laughter]
…
George Bush: Yeah, yeah, he is sweet
Tony Blair: He is honey.
[But who are they talking about here? Could it be John Howard?]
More on the real story at Bush lunch chat is caught on tape, BBC.
It’s probably also a good time to mention this love song from Bush to Blair.
Palaeontologists digging in northern Australia have found fossil evidence of several new species
“…flesh-eating marsupial would have lived between 10 and 20 million years ago, scientists say.
The research team has also unearthed evidence of a large carnivorous bird dubbed the “demon duck of doom”.
