A on asylum seekers in Australia claims that John Howard’s “hard-line policy” on intercepting boats “has been a huge political success for Prime Minister John Howard, delivering him a third consecutive election victory late last year”. Surely Beazley’s decision to align the Opposition with that policy (thus causing usual Labour voters to split their vote between the parties that had better policies on immigration) was a factor that can’t be ignored.
